Don Cardwell-1

Donald Eugene Cardwell was born on this day in 1935, in Winston-Salem, to Charles H. and Lillian A. Denny Cardwell.

Don attended the local schools, and graduated from Gray High School.

He was a right-handed baseball pitcher, and he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur agent in 1954.  He made his major league debut with the Phillies in 1957.  Don was traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1960.  Two days later he pitched a no-hitter against the Cardinals, and this was the first no-hitter ever thrown by a pitcher in his first start with a new team.

Don was with the Cubs until 1962, when he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals.  He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1963, then he was traded to the New York Mets in 1966.  He was part of the 1969 Worlds Series winning team.

Don was traded to the Atlanta Braves in 1970, and his last major league appearance was on September 27, 1970.

Don was married to Sylvia Cardwell, and he passed away in 2008.
